More Than A Champion: Muhammad Ali's Special Bond With Malaysia

It has been 10 years since the world bid farewell to Muhammad Ali, who passed away on 3 June 2016. Revered as one of the greatest boxers in history, Ali's legacy extended far beyond the ring — and few countries outside the United States share as unique a connection with him as Malaysia.

In July 1975, Kuala Lumpur became the centre of the sporting world when Ali arrived to defend his heavyweight title against European champion Joe Bugner at Stadium Merdeka. Thousands packed the historic stadium, while millions around the globe followed the fight, placing Malaysia firmly on the international sporting map.

Yet Ali's visit was about more than boxing. During his stay, he attended Friday prayers at Masjid Negara alongside an estimated 7,000 worshippers, reflecting the deep bond he felt with the Muslim community here. He also planted a rambutan tree within the mosque grounds — a living reminder of his memorable visit that still resonates today.

Ali's Malaysian journey also included an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, at Istana Negara, highlighting the significance of his visit to the nation.

For those who witnessed it, Muhammad Ali was not merely a world champion visiting Malaysia. He was a global icon whose charisma, humility and presence left an enduring impression on the country.

A decade after his passing, Malaysians still remember the man who came as a boxing legend — and left as part of our shared history.
