Sandokan: The Pirate Prince -- A Sea Hero from the Malay World
Sandokan: The Pirate Prince is now showing on Astro, bringing to life the legend of a sea warrior who fights against colonial powers in our region. The story unfolds around Borneo, the Sulu Sea, and the waters of the Malay Peninsula, making it especially relatable for Malaysian viewers.
Sandokan is a prince who loses his throne because of colonialism, and becomes a pirate leader seeking revenge against European powers. Together with his friend Yanez, he leads guerrilla battles from island to island -- between friendship, betrayal, and forbidden love.
The character was created by Italian writer Emilio Salgari, who wrote classic adventure novels about Southeast Asia in the 19th century. Sandokan’s popularity peaked with the 1970s TV series starring Kabir Bedi, which became a major phenomenon in Europe and Asia.
Its core themes still feel fresh today:
resistance against colonialism, the struggle for dignity and identity, and a hero branded a “pirate” by colonisers but seen as a fighter by his people.
In short, this is not just a pirate tale -- it is a story of the Malay world, Borneo, and the lingering shadows of colonialism in our history.
