Pekan’s Mystery From The Sky: Space Debris Or Something Else?

People were abuzz when an “out-of-this-world” object was reported to have been discovered in Pekan, Pahang.

Yes, a suspected piece of space debris was found along the beach at Kampung Tanjung, Nenasi last Tuesday. District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the object was discovered by local residents at about 5pm, who then alerted the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

The object, measuring approximately 4.26 metres by 3.64 metres, was inspected and tested by officers from the Malaysian Atomic Energy Department, who confirmed that it was free from radiation.

The discovery comes as a reminder of several sky spectacles Malaysians have witnessed in recent years.

In October 2025, residents in parts of Sarawak including Bintulu and Miri reported a bright streak and loud boom across the sky. The Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) later confirmed it as a bolide -- a bright meteor burning up in the atmosphere-- with no fragments found on the ground.

In August 2024, Malaysians were also treated to the stunning Perseid meteor shower, clearly visible after midnight as the Moon had set, according to MYSA.

Earlier, in February 2020, a bright fireball was widely observed over Johor Bahru and Singapore (pic below). Experts concluded it likely burned up completely in the atmosphere, with no confirmed meteorite fragments reaching Earth.

There have been dramatic events in deep prehistory too. At Bukit Bunuh, geological evidence such as suevite and impact breccias suggests an ancient impact event about 1.83 million years ago -- now regarded as the oldest known stone-tool workshop site in the region, believed to have been destroyed by that impact.
