Ol’ Skool Makan #14: Roti Aman Jaya -- Sekinchan's Classic Bread

Like most city folks, I often find myself escaping to Sekinchan, about 100km from home, to soak in the endless green paddy fields and that unmistakable authentic kampung feel. The air’s fresher, the pace slower, and life somehow feels simpler. But no trip to Sekinchan is complete without a stop at one legendary spot -- Roti Aman Jaya.

Tucked away in the heart of town, this family-run bakery has been serving locals since 1977. It’s now operated by the third generation, making it the last remaining traditional bakery in Sekinchan. Step inside and you’ll be greeted by the smell of freshly baked bread -- soft, fluffy, and kissed by that old-school sweetness that modern bakeries can never quite replicate. Here, locals don’t just buy bread -- they’re buying a piece of memory.

The bakery is known for its traditional fillings -- kaya, kacang, kelapa, and kari ayam -- but my personal favourite has to be the roti krim, that simple, creamy delight that somehow never grows old. Regulars don’t walk out with one or two pieces; they buy 20 at a time, sometimes more!  Each bun is baked fresh daily, just like it’s been for nearly half a century.

Once you’ve made your purchase, drive just a few minutes to Pantai Redang. Find a spot by the sea, unwrap that still-fresh bun, and take a bite as the breeze hits your face and kids run about playing by the water. It’s the kind of simple pleasure that makes life feel just right.

About Ol' Skool Makan

Ol' Skool Makan is my little tribute to Malaysia’s timeless eateries -- the ones that fed us before hashtags, food apps, and fancy plating. It’s about real food, real people, and memories that still smell like sambal and kopi-O.
