Ol’ Skool Makan #11: Lontong Klang -- More Than Just Breakfast
As a true-blue Johorean, I’ve always had a soft spot (and stomach) for lontong. Growing up, it was a breakfast staple and a must-have during Hari Raya mornings -- that glorious combo of nasi impit, kuah lodeh and sambal that just says “home.”
Now, while the Klang Valley has no shortage of Johor-style lontong spots, I’ve also developed a fondness for the Selangor version -- and one name stands out: Lontong Klang. They’ve got a few outlets around Shah Alam that my family and I frequent, but to truly appreciate its heritage, you have to visit their original spot in Klang, at Lebuh Tapah.
Lontong Klang’s story goes way back to the early 1970s, when it began as one of the popular stalls at the legendary Emporium Makan -- a beloved food court right in the heart of Klang, opposite Pasar Jawa and beside Jambatan Kota. For decades, Emporium Makan was a makan landmark for Klangites until it finally closed in 2019 to make way for the LRT3 project. Thankfully, the Lontong Klang legacy lived on.

Here, the lontong isn’t quite like the southern Johor version. The kuah is less yellow than the usual lodeh, leaning instead towards a subtle reddish hue -- richer, slightly spicier, and deeply flavourful. Each set comes with nasi impit, kuah, tempe, bergedil, telur, serunding kelapa, and your protein of choice -- be it ayam goreng, paru lembut, or sambal sotong rendam. For the adventurous (and hungry), the Special sets are a must.
Klangites who grew up on this dish are fiercely proud of it -- and honestly, it’s easy to see why. Old-school, flavour-packed, and uniquely Selangor, Lontong Klang is one of those heritage eats that truly lives up to its name.
About Ol' Skool Makan
Ol' Skool Makan is my little tribute to Malaysia’s timeless eateries -- the ones that fed us before hashtags, food apps, and fancy plating. It’s about real food, real people, and memories that still smell like sambal and kopi-O.
