Gunung Lang: A Hidden Oasis Just Minutes from Ipoh
I still remember the first time we visited Gunung Lang Recreational Park in Ipoh. Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect -- maybe just another park or lake. But the moment we stepped out of the car, we were blown away. The towering limestone cliffs stood dramatically against the sky, reflected perfectly in the still, green lake below. There was beauty everywhere we looked -- the kind that makes you pause and just take it all in.
The boat ride across the lake was short but so pleasant. As we glided over the calm water, surrounded by cliffs and lush greenery, it felt like we were entering another world (cue the "Jurassic Park" film score) -- a quiet little paradise tucked just five kilometres from Ipoh city centre. Once we reached the jetty on the other side, the park opened up into a charming mix of walking trails, wooden boardwalks, gazebos, and a man-made waterfall cascading down the rocks. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, breathe deeper, and simply enjoy being outdoors.
What makes Gunung Lang even more special is its story. This area was once used for tin mining -- a reminder of Ipoh’s rich industrial past. The mining left behind lakes and uneven terrain, but instead of letting it go to waste, the Ipoh City Council and the National Landscape Department transformed it into the beautiful park it is today. Since opening in 2000, Gunung Lang has become a favourite among locals and visitors alike, showing how nature can reclaim and renew even the most altered landscapes.
Beyond the scenery, there’s plenty to explore. The limestone hills here -- Gunung Lang and its twin, Gunung Bilike -- form part of the Kinta Valley’s unique ecosystem. There’s a children’s playground, a mini petting zoo with goats and rabbits, and plenty of shaded spots for picnics or quiet reading. From the lookout towers, you can enjoy panoramic views of the lake and hills --- a photographer’s dream, especially in the early morning mist or during sunset when the light turns golden.
Whether you’re visiting Ipoh for a weekend or just passing through, Gunung Lang is worth the stop. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and close enough to the city that you can easily fit it into your day. For me, that first visit turned out to be one of those rare surprises -- when you go in expecting little, and end up discovering a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
