Memories Of Cannes -- From Movie Stars To Macarons

 

Ah, Cannes... If you work in TV, it's a default dream to be part of the biggest TV content marketplace, MIPCOM held at Cannes annually.

I made my "debut" back in 2010. A 12-hour flight from KL took me to Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam after which I took another flight to Nice.

A Euro63-cab ride then took me to Cannes itself. Here's a view of Nice:



Since the event had already started when I arrived, I dove straight into the action.

My hotel was smack right in the middle of town, and after a short walk, there I was at the Palais des Festival, the famous convention centre that also hosts the Cannes Film Festival. You know, the thing that Clooney and co attend almost every year. :)




But forget the glitz and glamlah. it was meetings all day, everyday and the mostly gloomy weather in the beginning limited our outdoor activities.



Overall, I didn't get to do much sight-seeing, but I did have a good look at the beachfront area near the Palais, called La Croisette. (As seen in the Mr Bean's Holiday movie.)



It's the place to just hangout, shop at luxury stores, have a panini or two and er... some other stuff 😉




We also had plenty of seafood and gelato, and the whole trip was made sweeter by these delicious little things: MACARONS! First time makanlah at that time, still rasa teruja 😀



So, did we meet any famous people? Yes indeed. VOILA!

And you know what? He totally exceeded expectations. I knew he's eloquent and a good businessman and stuff, but the guy really spoke sense and was full of substance when talking about "Building Entertainment Brands". And to that, I stick my tongue out, dude!

And at another do, we were just chatting and enjoying some hors d'oeuvres when... SJP walked in. She was in town to promote a new reality show "Work of Art".


And finally, before I left, I just had to take a walk to the Old Quarters and up the hill to Musee de la Castre. From there, you could literally see the whole of the Cannes town centre. Breathtaking.

Ross Ariffin Meninggal Dunia

 Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun. Ross Ariffin was the one who gave me my first real break in songwriting -- he opened the door for my lyrics to be sung by local artistes. I got to know him through his ex-wife, who happened to be my editor when I first started freelancing. Our first project together was an album he produced for a newcomer, Ira Khairani. I wrote lyrics for three of her songs -- not bad for a rookie at the time. I also had the opportunity to write lyrics for one of his compositions for Fauziah Latiff. Ross later introduced me to Edwin of SRC, who signed me on, and that eventually led to me writing for Siti, Liza Hanim, Aqasha, and others. Ross was a brilliant producer and a classically-trained musician. I first noticed him when he won a regional songwriting competition, and later he cemented his name in the industry by winning Anugerah Juara Lagu with 'Kau Dan Aku'. Ol’ Skool Makan #3: Haji Shariff Cendol -- A Sweet Legacy Of Seremban

I won’t miss this one -- not a chance. Every time I’m in Seremban , Haji Shariff Cendol is a must-stop. It’s conveniently near Jalan Nunis , so much so that I’d always snap a photo of my bowl of cendol and send it to my friend Graig Nunis -- just for the fun of it. Along with that, I’d order the rojak , because really, what’s a perfect bowl of cendol without its savoury, nutty partner in crime? The history here goes way back. The late Haji Shariff Haji Dolman started selling cendol around 1930 , pushing his cart around the streets of Seremban before finally setting up shop in town. His recipe was simple but unforgettable -- smooth shaved ice, thick creamy coconut milk, rich gula Melaka , and those trademark bright-green cendol strands made fresh daily. The business has since passed through generations, but that old-school taste still hits the spot every single time. The outlet itself remains charmingly no-frills.
