When ABC Wide World of Sports Was Our Netflix

Growing up, we watched a lot of gymnastics, skiing, the rodeo and NASCAR. Why? Because we loved watching ABC’s Wide World of Sports (plus, let’s be real — there wasn’t much choice back then, lah. We had to watch whatever was on, haha).

Saturday evenings were the highlight: we’d be glued to the TV (it was a Singapore channel if I remember correctly), mesmerised by skiers racing down snowy slopes in Colorado, cowboys trying to tame wild bulls, and Mary Lou Retton flipping her way into gymnastics glory.

And of course, who could forget the legendary opening montage — ‘the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat’ — forever etched in our brains by that poor ski jumper tumbling spectacularly off the ramp!
