Singapore’s Separation Agreement Signed
On August 7, 1965, Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman proposed the separation of Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia. The agreement for the separation was signed on this day by both the Malaysian and Singaporean governments.
Just two days later, on August 9, 1965, Singapore officially became an independent and sovereign nation, exiting the Federation.
This marked one of the most pivotal moments in the history of both Malaysia and Singapore, leading to the formation of two separate countries with very different political and economic paths.
