M. Valampuri: The Cyclist Who Blew My Young Mind
This video stirred up a long-lost memory. I remember, when I was very small, someone showing me photographs of an extraordinary cycling feat. I was utterly amazed. Like, fuyooo... how could anyone possibly ride a bicycle in reverse, let alone perform stunts like taking a bath and tukar baju while doing it?
Those images fascinated me for years, lingering in my mind like scenes from an unbelievable dream.
The man behind this marvel was M. Valampuri, a 23-year-old cyclist from South India. On 22 January, 1961, in Kuala Lumpur, he created a sensation with a 72-hour non-stop cycling exhibition.
Riding in reverse and performing a series of daring stunts, Valampuri drew crowds who watched in disbelief and delight, turning an otherwise ordinary day into an unforgettable moment in the city’s history.
