My 10 Favourite Sports Films
These aren’t necessarily the greatest sports films ever made—some didn’t win Oscars, and a few were even panned by critics. But as a lifelong sports fan, these are the ones I’ve enjoyed watching over and over again (well, with the exception of the first entry).
So grab your popcorn, tighten your headband, and let’s get ready to rumbllleeee...
F1 The Movie (2025)
I LOVE F1 -- the sport. So when I heard Brad Pitt was starring in an F1 film, backed by an American production team, I’ll admit… I sighed and lowered my expectations. But wow—what a ride this turned out to be! Immersive, adrenaline-charged, and totally edge-of-your-seat stuff. Sure, a few scenes stretch realism, but let’s be honest -- F1 itself has delivered moments more Hollywood than Hollywood. From lights out to the chequered flag, this one’s a clear win.
Tin Cup (1996)
Yes, it's a golf movie starring Kevin Costner, but it's also an absorbing underdog story full of ego and meltdowns, and just the right amount of comedy. That final scene still makes me laugh and cry without fail.
Days Of Thunder (1990)
It’s basically 'Top Gun' on wheels. Tom Cruise, NASCAR, roaring engines, and a killer ’90s vibe. I used to own the video tape and watched it at least a gazillion times. And every time I hear "Gimme Some Lovin" by Terry Reid, all I can picture is a bunch of cool cars going round and round a track at maximum speed!
Major League (1989)
Baseball is not really part of the Malaysian psyche, but 'Major League''s a cool and funny underdog story with a big heart to boot that everyone can enjoy. And Charlie Sheen pre-crazy was pretty watchable too.
Escape To Victory (1981)
I mean, the movie has Pele, Osvaldo Ardiles, Bobby Moore, John Wark and Michael Caine! If you've never seen it, it's about POWs in a German prison camp who plan an escape during a football match against Nazi officers. Yes, it was more than just about winning a game of football, but about beating oppressors on their own turf. I watched it for the first on the VCR of course, but it used to be screened on TV during special holidays too. P.S.: Check out Pele's dramatic bicycle kick on youtube now!
Rocky IV (1985)
He fights Russia, unites a crowd, and saves the world— American propaganda at its best, hahaha. But I did watch this again recently and was reminded of how I absolutely loved the pulsating soundtrack. And that's why IV gets my vote over the more critically-acclaimed I & II.
Invictus (2009)
'Invictus' isn’t just about rugby — it’s about how Nelson Mandela used the game to unite a broken nation. Morgan Freeman delivers Madiba’s quiet strength perfectly, and that final match? Total goosebumps. (I watched it on a flight and I remember having to hold back my manly tears at the end.)
White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Streetball, fast talk, and slick moves. A buddy film that’s sharp, funny, and oh-so-‘90s. I actually went to Central Market, KL to get the T-shirt printed. Check out Exhibit A.
The Karate Kid (1984)
“Wax on, wax off” became a life mantra. A timeless tale of discipline, bullying, and finding strength in the quietest teacher. Also if you must know, I was my school's "Ralph Macchio". Hahaha.
Space Jam (1996)
Michael Jordan. 'Nuff said.
