Have You Ever Met The Grand Old Lady Of Miri?

If you're ever in Miri, Sarawak there's one local legend you definitely shouldn't miss — the Grand Old Lady! No, not someone's ah ma or nenek, but Malaysia’s very first oil well, standing proud on top of Canada Hill.

She was drilled way back in 1910, kicking off the oil industry in the country and putting Miri on the map. Today, this steel giant is retired, but still standing tall at 30 metres — a symbol of history, strength, and Sarawak’s early beginnings in the petroleum world.

Take a stroll around, snap some photos with amazing views of the city and coastline (the Miri 'Hollywood' sign is also here), and don’t forget to pop into the Petroleum Museum right next door. It’s a fun way to see old equipment, learn some cool facts, and get a glimpse of Miri’s oil-town roots.

Tip: Come during sunset — the view from the hill is stunning!
