Meeting Mr Wright

Before there were a gazillion travel and lifestyle shows on TV and the Internet, Ian Wright was the man we looked forward to watching every single week on Discovery channel.  My first encounter with the world's most famous traveller then actually took place in the loo of the Sheraton Imperial Hotel back in 2001. Definitely wasn’t the kind of first meeting I had imagined. But it quickly got ‘normal’ as Wright and us press people were ushered into a seminar room for a group interview. Scruffy and bubbly, what you saw of him on TV was what you got in person, which made the interview pretty easy ‘cos he gave good and long quotes. The dream interviewee. He was as sporting when it came to the photo-shoot. Wright chomped on a rambutan skin and snaked his way through some plants, just for the benefit of our cameras. Remembering Sudir

Today marks the 33rd year that the late great Sudirman Haji Arshad has left us. Personally, it took me a while to be a fan of Sudirman simply because when I was growing up, the people around me thought he, well, sucked. “Macam kera kena belacan”, was the phrase often used to describe him. But looking back now, I can only say that Sudirman was a man ahead of his time. He stood out not only because of his unique voice and over-the-top showmanship, but he was a true visionary, and a patriot. Think about his mega concert at Chow Kit Road. That was simply genius. Here’s an entertainer who knew who his audience was, and gave them something to remember for their rest of their lives. And he did it while flying the Malaysian flag high and proud. Watching clips of his performances, it’s evident that Sudirman really thought about his performances; everything is choreographed and executed to please his audience.
